APPLYING FOR REGISTRATION WITH THE CPSM

PROFESSIONS SUPPLEMENTARY TO MEDICINE ACT

Application for registration should be made on Form A and submitted with registration fees and other required documents to:

Applicants paying by International Bank Transfer should pay an additional US$25 to cover the Receiving Fee charged to the Council by the Bank.         

*NO application will be considered unless fees have been paid. Registration fee is non-refundable*.

Should you apply for registration in a name other than that appearing on your academic or qualification, a certified marriage certificate or deed poll must be submitted. All documents submitted in a language other than English, must be translated, verified, and sealed by an approved institution.

Before signing your application form, you should read, date and sign the Council’s statement relating Infamous Conduct, which is attached to these notes.

On acceptance of your registration, the following particulars are entered in the Council’s register:

  • Full name, title, decoration and honors
  • Home address and practice address
  • Academic or professional qualifications, as approved by the Council. and you may use the title “State Registered“
  • Additional academic or professional qualifications, acquired after initial registration, may be added to the Register, if the Council approves them.
  • In addition to your home address, each registrant is required to provide a practice address. You are required to notify the Council of any changes to your addresses.

Please note that initial registration is a pre-requisite to employment, and re-registration is necessary to protect your professional status.

The Professions Supplementary to Medicine Act (1965), and Regulations relating thereto, legislates registration and re-registration.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR REGISTRATION

  1. Completed FORM A
  • Passport- Size photograph
  • Copy of degree certificate(s)

            (this should be certified or the original presented for verification)

  • Two (2) letters of recommendation
  • One (1) from a licensed member of the applicant’s professional group
  • One (1) from someone to whom the applicant is well known, e.g. JP, Notary, Teacher, Lawyer, Clergyman) addressed to the Registrar, Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine.
  • Registration Fee:
  • Jamaican Applicant- $4,000.00
  • Non-Jamaican applicant- $120 US

Additional Requirement for Specific Applicants

Medical Technologists

  1. Proof of Internship Completed
  • CSEC passes (grades 1-3) in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and one (1) other approved academic subject.

Radiographers (UWI)

  1. Letter of completion of programme from Programme Director, UWI.

Physiotherapists, Nutrition and Dietetic Assistants, Public Health Inspectors

Proof of internship completed

Psychologists

  1. 2500 supervised practice hours- (log, letter)

Foreign nationals- 500 supervised practice hours for cultural purposes.

RENEWING YOUR LICENSE.

  • The Council operates on a Fiscal Year policy beginning April 1st and ending March 31st of the year following.
  • The Council’s renewal period is April 1st to June 30th after which the application is deemed late and subject to penalty.
  • Renewal applications for any Fiscal year are not accepted after December 31st.
  • Renewal applications may be submitted as early as February 1st for the upcoming Fiscal year. If an approval is granted, the applicant is issued a license valid for one (1) year, commencing April 1st to March 31st of the upcoming Fiscal year.
  • Irrespective of when you register or renew, the validity of your license is only within the Council’s Fiscal year policy. This means that your license will expire on March 31st regardless of the month in which you registered or renewed that year.
  • Whether you are practising in Jamaica or not you should renew your license each year.

SUSPENDING YOUR LICENSE

  • If you do not intend to practise in your profession for a while, you may request suspension of your license for one (1) to five (5) years, by permission of the Council.
  • At the end of the five year period you must renew your license and submit one year’s appropriate credit hours with your renewal application.
  • The credit hours submitted must have been earned in the year immediately prior to the year for which you are renewing.
  • If you allow a suspension to run over, you will be required to register as a new applicant,  with all criteria, conditions and qualifications required for a new registration at that time.

PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH

Medical Professionals practising in Jamaica are required to communicate with patients/clients in English, Jamaica’s official language.

Effective November 1, 2023, the Council for Professions Supplementary to Medicine requests English Proficiency Certification from applicants who do not speak English as a First Language.
